Dream joins Celebration, Destiny, Spirit and Island Escape in providing home-from-home cruises for the British market, packaged with flights from regional airports around the country.

The ship, formerly the Costa Europa, came straight from dry-dock in Sicily to rescue 2,800 holidaymakers stranded in Majorca before embarking on its first proper cruise – with some crew members left behind because they were stranded by the ash cloud chaos.

But operations swung into top gear this week as the ship left Palma with a full complement of crew and passengers.

Fares for seven-night voyages, to destinations such as Tunis, Naples and Barcelona, or Villefranche, Rome and Ajaccio, start from £530 for departures in May. There are plenty of children’s facilities on board, but cruises in June and September will be adults-only – and during the World Cup all England’s matches and most of the other big games will be shown on board.

Throughout the summer, Thomson will be looking closely at how the ship operates in her new colours, and at the end of the Mediterranean season, it will be dry-docked in Hamburg for a £5 million refit. Some of that money will be spent on fitting stern thrusters to improve manoeuvrability (and save on the cost of tugs when berthing). The rest will be spent on upgrading cabins and public rooms.

Managing director David Selby told me: “Our first thought was that the casino is bigger than we need, and we were considering changing some of that space. But apparently this week it has been very busy in there, so we’ll wait to see how that works out.”

He may want to look at extending the servery areas in the Andromeda buffet restaurant. Some passengers have complained of long queues at breakfast and lunch

For more details of Dream’s itineraries and to book online, go to www.thomson.co.uk/cruise, call 0871 231 4691, or visit any Thomson or First Choice travel agent.

Dream will be up against some formidable competition as rival cruise lines slash their fares .

Disney Magic arrives in the UK in June, and a seven-night cruise from Barcelona to Dover, calling at Gibraltar, Cadiz and Lisbon, is on offer for £699, including one-way flights. Departs June 5. Go to www.virginholidayscruises.co.uk or call 0871 781 9893.

For the same price, you could sail on P&O’s Ventura on a seven-night round-trip from Southampton to Vigo, Lisbon, La Rochelle and Brest. The fare includes £100 on-board spending money, and balcony cabins are available from £899. Departs July 24. Go to www.iglucruise.com or call 020 8544 6447.

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is the grandest ocean liner afloat, and it’s not often you get an opportunity to spend four nights on board for £399. The ship departs Southampton on May 28 and visits Bruges, Rotterdam and Cherbourg. Balcony cabins are available for an extra £100. Go to www.iglucruise.com or call 020 8544 6447.

But the deal of the week has to be a seven-night cruise on the inappropriately-named Costa Fortuna. This one definitely won’t cost a fortune – it’s just £199 per person. Sailing from Venice on May 17, the ship visits Bari, Olympia, Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes, before returning via Dubrovnik. Flights are not included in the fare, but if you’re prepared to travel light and risk flying with Ryanair, I found round trip flights from Stansted for less than £70 per person. go to www.costacruises.co.uk or call 0845 351 0552.

It was good to get together with Captain Roy Dearman again last night as he sailed Thomson Cruises’ new ship, Thomson Dream, out of Barcelona. He has transferred from the Celebration, where I met him in January, and he and the ship have had a torrid time over the last few weeks, culminating in the rescue of 2,800 holidaymakers stranded in Majorca by the shutdown of flights.

This week the vessel begins to settle into her new life, carrying 1,500 passengers around the Mediterranean on seven-day cruises from Palma, Majorca (where she is pictured above).

I was among a small group of journalists flown out to take a look around the ship yesterday, and we gathered for a celebratory glass of champagne on the bridge wing as Captain Dearman edged away from the quayside, pausing only to point out a whale just ahead of us.

Dream is the biggest in Thomson’s fleet, and as yet there have been few changes made from her former existence as Costa Europa. Over the next few months the company will assess what needs to be done before the ship goes to Hamburg in September for a £5 million re-fit.

In December, the ship will call at Southampton before a Transatlantic crossing to begin a winter season in the Caribbean, where her itineraries will include two-night stops in Havana – something that no American cruise ship can offer.

Under Dream’s newly-painted funnel – now Thomson blue instead of Costa yellow – is a spacious pool area with a retractable glass roof for cooler days. The Andromeda buffet restaurant is on deck 9, and most of the public rooms are one deck lower, with the two-storey Atlante Theatre at the bow and the Labonte disco at the stern. In between there’s a street of shops, the popular Ocean Bar, and another showroom, the Medusa Lounge.

The main Orion waiter-service restaurant is down on deck 4, and there’s Sirens restaurant and the speciality Grill back up on deck 11.

There’s plenty of evidence on board of the ship’s even earlier life, as Holland America’s Westerdam, including an impressive collection of antique objets d’art which was valued some years ago at $3 million (about £1.8 million).

Fortunately, there’s no evidence of the damage caused when, as Costa Europa, she slammed into the quayside at Sharm el Sheik in February, causing the deaths of three crewmembers. Repairs were carried out in drydock at Palermo, Sicily, before the ship was handed over to Thomson.

Later in the week, I’ll be back on the subject of Thomson Dream, including an interview with managing director David Selby, and some pictures of those interiors.

All aboard! Celebrity Eclipse is on her way back to the UK carrying 2,200 holidaymakers who were stranded by the volcanic ash flight ban.

Many of them can’t believe their luck. Yesterday they were stuck in Spain, not knowing when they would be able to return home. Now they are travelling in five-star luxury, with free meals, on a brand new cruise ship which would normally cost more than £1,000 a week.

Most of the holidaymakers boarding the £500 million ship in the northern port of Bilbao this morning had been brought by bus from the Costas. Others had been flown into Spain from as far apart as Mexico and Egypt by tour operators Thomson, First Choice, Thomas Cook and Co-op Travel.

Martin and Jane Greenford and their two children, Sarah, 13, and Luke, 11, took a 15-hour overnight bus trip from Fuengirola, in southern Spain. Mrs Greenford, 44, a nurse, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, said: “We have been stuck since Sunday. The bus ride was a nightmare.

“Thomas Cook said going home on a liner might be an option but we never expected anything like this. It’s like a palace.”

Honeymoon couple Felicity and David Gardner, from Staffordshire, had a nine-hour journey to reach the port. Mrs Gardner, 25, and a teacher, arrived on the ship – which has three swimming pools, 13 bars, and a half-acre lawn of real grass – and said: “This is a bit of a contrast with Benidorm.”

Richard Fain, chairman of Celebrity Cruises, said the tour operators were paying for the ship’s fuel. “The rest is on us, but I don’t even know how much it is costing.”

The passengers will be fed and entertained free of charge during the 30-hour voyage, and the ship will arrive in Southampton on Friday evening, in time for her naming celebrations to go ahead as planned on Saturday.

Another cruise ship, the appropriately-named Island Escape, is due to arrive in Falmouth tomorrow morning, carrying 1,400 Thomson and First Choice holidaymakers who had been stranded in the Canaries and Madeira.

And Thomson Dream has embarked on her maiden voyage from Palma to Livorno, Barcelona and Villefranche after ferrying 2,800 people from Majorca to the Spanish mainland when they were unable to fly.

There will be two groups of passengers on cruise ships this summer - those desperate to keep up with the latest exploits of Rooney, Ronaldo, Messi and Drogba in the World Cup, and those who have taken to the sea...

There will be two groups of passengers on cruise ships this summer – those desperate to keep up with the latest exploits of Rooney, Ronaldo, Messi and Drogba in the World Cup, and those who have taken to the sea in the hope of avoiding wall-to-wall TV coverage from South Africa.

As the opening date of June 11 grows closer, and more cruise lines announce that they have paid for rights to screen matches, it’s beginning to look like the fans will have the upper hand.

England supporters sailing with P&O, Cunard and Ocean Village will be able to watch all their team’s games live, and the final will be screened on the 10 ships, regardless of whether Capello’s squad get that far.

Thomson Cruises will also be showing all England games on their ships, and have taken the precaution of adding other top teams as well, in the event of an ankle injury for Rooney sending our lads home at the end of the first stage.

The NCL ships sailing in Europe – that’s Norwegian Gem, Sun and Jade – will be following Spain, the Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, U.S.A., Germany, Italy and England during the initial stages, and will then screen all the knock-out games through to the final. Even Norwegian Epic, the lines newest and biggest ship, which will be in the UK from June 22 before sailing to New York for its inauguration.

Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara announced this week that they have obtained rights to screen all matches – but only while their ships are in international waters. Best check that England are not facing a crucial tie while Independence of the Seas is tied up at Barcelona or Malaga.

Also probably best to avoid Costa and MSC’s ships if you don’t want to be swamped by armies of Italian fans.

But if you want to get away from the football altogether, then the ships of Fred Olsen Cruise Line are the place for you – I just wonder what the conversation at breakfast will be like, and how many passengers will have radios clamped to their ears to check on the results.

Incidentally, one man who must be praying for an early England exit is Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone – The British Grand Prix takes place on the same day as the World Cup final.
